Katy's event calendar runs year-round, anchored by three big annual traditions: the Katy Rice Harvest Festival each October, the July 4 Freedom Celebration, and the Old-Fashioned Christmas Festival in December. Between them sit monthly markets, prairie events and a spring brewfest. This guide covers the recurring annual events with verified dates, locations and links; for the current week-by-week schedule, check the What's happening page, which is updated as new dates are confirmed.
The Katy Rice Harvest Festival (October)
The Rice Harvest Festival is Katy's signature event: a two-day celebration held at the Historic Town Square in front of Katy City Hall, 904 Avenue C, inside the incorporated City of Katy. It began in 1981 and has run for more than 40 years, honoring the rice farming that once earned Katy the nickname "Rice Capital of the World."
The 2026 edition runs October 10-11 and includes carnival rides, live music on the main stage, more than 100 vendor booths, food trucks, a beer garden, a parade, and the AgVenture Area with interactive agricultural exhibits, a petting zoo and pony rides. Admission is about $15 for adults and free for kids 12 and under, with a separate carnival pass. Proceeds support community causes including Rotary Club scholarships. Confirm the current year's dates and ticket details on the official site, katyriceharvestfestival.com.
Katy Freedom Celebration (July 4)
The City of Katy's Independence Day celebration, held in partnership with Typhoon Texas, fills the day with family activities, live music and food vendors, then closes with a professional fireworks show around 9 PM. The fireworks are viewable from the Typhoon Texas and Katy Mills area, so families spread out with blankets and lawn chairs. One geography note: Typhoon Texas sits at 555 Katy Fort Bend Road in the greater Katy area, not inside Katy city limits, which is a useful reminder that "Katy" covers more than the historic city. The City of Katy publishes each year's celebration details on cityofkaty.com.
Katy Old-Fashioned Christmas Festival (December)
The holiday season in Katy peaks on the first Saturday of December, when Historic Downtown Katy hosts the Old-Fashioned Christmas Festival: roughly 150 vendors, carolers, food trucks, a petting zoo and about 50,000 pounds of snow for the kids. The City of Katy also runs its own holiday kickoff at the Historic Town Square the same weekend. It is the busiest day of the year on Second Street, so arrive early and park once. The Old Town Katy community guide and the Old Town history post give the district's background before you go.
Wild West Brewfest (spring)
The Rotary Club of Katy hosts Wild West Brewfest, a three-day craft beer festival at Typhoon Texas Waterpark that has grown into one of the region's most popular. The 2026 edition ran March 26-28 and featured 500-plus beers, live music and food trucks, with proceeds benefiting local charities. The 2027 edition moves to April 15-17, so the dates shift a little from year to year; the official site, wildwestbrewfest.com, keeps the current schedule. It is an adults-focused weekend, while the summer waterpark season at Typhoon Texas is the family counterpart.
Out on the prairie: Coastal Prairie Conservancy events
Just north of Katy, the Coastal Prairie Conservancy (formerly the Katy Prairie Conservancy) runs a year-round calendar on the Katy Prairie Preserve that is free, family-friendly and genuinely special. The Spring Festival on the Katy Prairie in April offers wildflower walks, kite flying, prairie seed ball making, bluegrass music, food trucks and bird watching. In November, the Putting Down Roots Fall Planting Festival is the conservancy's largest volunteer planting event, where families help restore native prairie habitat. Winter brings the Sandhill Crane Tours and the Christmas Bird Count, and "First Weekends on the Prairie" open the preserve with a naturalist on hand. Program dates live on the conservancy's site, coastalprairieconservancy.org.
The monthly markets
Katy Market Day is the long-running outdoor market on Second Street and Avenue B in Old Town, traditionally held the third Saturday of the month from March through November, with the December edition folding into the Christmas festival. The market's schedule has shifted over the years, so confirm the current dates on the What's happening page before you plan around it. The City of Katy also runs its own market series, The Katy Exchange, on the Historic Town Square, so check which market is running on a given weekend.
How to plan around the calendar
The event map tracks the geography of the area: the Rice Harvest Festival, the Christmas festival and the markets happen in the historic City of Katy (ZIP 77493), while Typhoon Texas, Katy Mills and most of the big parking-lot events sit in the greater Katy area (77494). A Katy mailing address does not mean a home is inside city limits, and the moving to Katy guide explains the difference in full. For a broader list of parks, dining and day-to-day outings that round out the calendar, the lifestyle page keeps the verified list.
