Old Town Katy is the original 1895 railroad townsite, the small walkable core of the City of Katy where the town began. How Katy got its name

Named for a railroad

Before the railroad, this was Cane Island, a prairie settlement named for Cane Island Creek. Everything changed in the 1890s, when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad laid track through the area, completing its line in 1895. The MKT was nicknamed “the Katy,” short for K-T, and when James Oliver Thomas laid out the town site in 1895 and secured a post office in 1896, the town took the railroad's name. The first station was little more than a boxcar with a water tank; a real depot followed around 1898.

Old Town is that original townsite along the rail right-of-way, parallel to today's I-10 and U.S. 90. Its restored 1890s to 1920s storefronts now hold boutiques, coffeehouses and restaurants. The City of Katy itself was incorporated in 1945, with C. L. Baird as its first mayor, and the modern city has stayed true to those railroad-town roots.

Old Town is where Katy celebrates

Historic Town Square, between the old depot and Katy City Hall at 904 Avenue C, hosts the city's signature events. On the first Saturday of most months, Katy Market Day fills Second Street with vendors. In October, the Katy Rice Harvest Festival brings music, food and 100+ booths to the square. What it is like to live in the City of Katy

Old Town neighborhoods mix century-old bungalows and cottages with newer infill just blocks from the square, and they benefit from real city services, including Katy police. It is the closest thing the region has to a traditional small-town main street, and housing here is scarce: inventory in the old core is limited, which keeps values steady and owners in place for decades.
