Katy ISD is growing fast, and the campuses being built tell you exactly where. The district welcomed more than 97,000 students for the 2025-26 school year, opened two new elementary schools in August 2025, and has another campus under construction for 2027. For buyers the practical question is a simple one: which school your exact address zones to today, and which one it may zone to after the next boundary change.
How big is Katy ISD right now?
Katy ISD's own first-day announcement put enrollment at more than 97,000 students for 2025-26, served by 100+ campuses and support facilities and roughly 14,000 educators and staff (Katy ISD, August 2025). Later state reporting counts a little differently: the Texas Education Agency's 2025-26 report cards list about 95,000 students across 78 schools, and the district dashboard shows roughly 95,700 students across about 80 schools. The exact number depends on the date and the counting method, but the direction does not. This is one of the largest districts in Texas, and it is still adding campuses.
Two new elementary schools opened for 2025-26
Both of the district's newest elementaries welcomed their first students on the first day of the 2025-26 year, August 13, 2025, and both were built with 2023 bond funding:
- Alfred and Ann Boudny Elementary (Elementary #47), at 7402 Katy Hockley Cut Off Road in the Elyson area, opened with about 940 students against a capacity of about 1,280.
- James and Mitzi Cross Elementary (Elementary #48), in the Sunterra development, opened the same day.
Both campuses sit in the district's fast-growing northwest quadrant, which is where much of the new home building in greater Katy is concentrated. Katy ISD's own news coverage, Katy Times and Katy Magazine all covered the openings in August 2025.
What's next: Elementary #49 on Pitts Road
The next campus on the list is already under construction. Katy ISD's Board of Trustees approved a $41.02 million construction contract with Drymalla Construction on February 23, 2026 for a new two-story elementary at 6435 Pitts Road, at the corner of Pitts Road and Sunterra Point Drive (Community Impact, March 6, 2026). The roughly 157,000-square-foot campus is designed for about 1,030 students and is scheduled to open in August 2027 for the 2027-28 school year, funded through Bond 2023.
A new campus means a new attendance zone, and Katy ISD runs an official attendance boundary modification process before any new school opens. The district publishes proposed boundary changes for Elementary #49 on its attendance boundary modification page, so families can see which neighborhoods shift to the new school before it opens.
How does a new school affect your home search?
When a new campus opens, the district redraws attendance boundaries, and a home zoned to one elementary today can shift to a new campus the following year. That is usually good news in practice, since the new school is typically closer to the new neighborhoods it serves, but it is still a change you should expect, not discover after closing.
And because no single school serves all of Katy, “which school?” is always an address question. A Katy mailing address does not mean a home is inside the incorporated City of Katy, and neither a city limit nor a community name determines a school assignment. Parts of the Katy-address area are served by Katy ISD, but Tamarron and Jordan Ranch feed Lamar CISD, parts of Sunterra sit in Royal ISD, and pockets near the edges fall in Fort Bend ISD or Houston ISD. The full community-by-community picture is on the schools guide, and the mechanics are in the school zoning explainer.
How to verify any address in four steps
- Step 1: Use the exact street address, never the community name or a ZIP.
- Step 2: Run it through the district boundary lookup at gis.katyisd.org or the Find My School page on katyisd.org to see the current elementary, junior high and high school assignments.
- Step 3: Check for near-term campus openings and any proposed boundary changes on the district's attendance boundary modification page.
- Step 4: Confirm the assignment in writing at offer time, then reconfirm at closing, because boundaries can shift between your first tour and the closing table.
What buyers should ask before making an offer
Add these to your pre-offer checklist, alongside the flood check and the HOA documents:
- Which district serves this address: Katy ISD, Lamar CISD, Royal ISD or another?
- Which elementary, junior high and high school does the address feed today, and what does the district's boundary proposal show for next year?
- Is a new campus planned near the neighborhood? When does it open, and which neighborhoods does the proposal move to it?
The same verification steps are part of the first-home buyer's checklist, and Carol walks every buyer through them before an offer is ever written.
